Chapter 5 A trip to the beach

It was a glorious July. Every day the sun shone and it was very hot so the gang
planned a trip to the beach. Granny and Grandpa agreed to take them one
               Wednesday.

They set off in the pickup fully equipped with swimming costumes, lots of food
and drinks and things to play with including a football, fishing nets, buckets and
               spades.

It was quite a long journey to Camber so every now and then, Ellie would ask

whether they were nearly there. Grandpa replied each time, “nearly”, which
was not very truthful earlier in the journey. Eventually, after about an hour, they
arrived at Camber Sands. Everyone jumped out of the truck, picked up
something to carry and ran to the beach.

They decided that once they had changed into their swimmies, they would have

a game of football. It was agreed that Harry and Ellie with Grandpa in goal
would be one side and Bells and James with Granny in goal would be the other.
Spades pushed into the sand formed the goals.

Two against two, with rotten goalies, proved hard work and goals were scored
with ease. After about ten minutes, two little boys asked if they could join in.
Within half an hour more children had joined and the sides had increased to six.

Whenever a goal was scored, the team cheered. So many goals were scored that
no-one bothered to remember the result. It didn’t matter anyway because what
was important was making new friends and enjoying the day.

Suddenly there was a scream from a lady close to the water. The game stopped
immediately and the gang ran to see what the problem was. The lady pointed
into the sea and cried “My little Lucy is floating out to sea in her boat and I

               can’t swim”.
