“Look, Bells”, cried Harry, “that zebra doesn’t look happy”.

               “Driver, stop!”, cried Bells.

The lorry stopped abruptly and the gang jumped off the lorry and headed

towards the zebra. The driver was not happy about this. “Come back here, you
               can’t go there”, he shouted.

“There aren’t any big cats prowling around are there?” asked James.

“No, but you have to stay in the lorry”, he replied.

“Call Jane the vet, it is an emergency” commanded Bells. “That zebra is not

               well”, she continued.

While the driver called Jane the vet, the gang ran up to the zebra.

“She is giving birth but it must have been for some time because she is very
weak”, said James. “Shall we help, Bells, until Jane gets here?”

“I think we should” agreed Bells.

“You put your hand inside to see what you can feel”, said Bells to James.

James got down on his knees at the back end of the zebra and gently pushed his
               hand inside her.

“I can feel two feet”, exclaimed James.

“Push in further to see if you can feel a head” instructed Bells.

James pushed his hand in further and by now most of his arm had disappeared
inside the poor zebra. “Yes, a head!” said James. “I will hang on to one leg as I

pull my arm out”, he continued.

               “Well done, James”, said Bells.

James pulled hard on the leg and soon a foot appeared.

“Hold tight, while I pull the other one”, said Bells.

They both pulled as hard as they could but nothing happened.

Ellie was watching and decided to offer some advice. “Don’t pull until she

               starts to push”, she said.

“Good idea”, said James. “How clever of you”

“I may be the smallest but I’m not stupid!” said Ellie who was very pleased that
               her suggestion was useful.
