It had never eaten anything like this before and was rather hoping that this
might be the beginning of a fruitful relationship. Imagine, it thought, if I could
feed on this sort of thing for ever if they adopted me.

The gang with their new friend continued with the picnic. The fox tried all sorts
of things but did not think much of apples or any other fruit for that matter.
Meat was definitely her thing. Yes ‘her’. By now the gang had worked out that
she was a she on account of the way she weed after a large bowl of lemonade.

When they had eaten as much as they could possibly consume and, in fact, there
was very little left, they lay in the sunshine and chatted about their new friend.

“Do you think she will be OK?” asked James.

“I am a bit worried because she was very hungry and probably can’t feed
               herself”, said Bells.

“She can hardly come home with us. Our dogs will be so cross”, said Harry.

They continued to discuss the fox and what she might be able to eat if alone in

the forest. The more they discussed it, the more they worried about the future
               of their little friend.

“It’s three o’ clock “, said James. “We had better pack up and return to the car
               park.”

Reluctantly they packed everything away in their rucksacks. The fox watched
their every move. She brushed past Ellie’s leg as if to say “Don’t forget me”.

When all was packed away, the gang set off back up the track and to their
               surprise, the fox followed.

Eventually they reached the parking area at the side of the road and waited for
Granny. The fox also waited but she obviously did not know why she was
               waiting.

The blue pickup appeared minutes later and Granny flashed the lights just so
that they knew that it was her. She didn’t notice the fox at first as she pulled

into the space by the road.

“Did you have a lovely time?” she asked as she got out of the pickup.

“Wonderful”, said Harry. “We have a new friend”, he continued, “who joined
               us for lunch”.

It was at this moment that Granny spotted the little fox quietly hiding behind

               Ellie.
