Bells and James waited for the zebra to push and then pulled with all their might
and not just the feet but several centimetres of leg were now out.
“Harry, hold this foot, I want to feel whether the head is following”,
commanded Bells.
Harry held the foot tightly and Bells pushed her hand inside the zebra. There
wasn’t much room with the two legs in the way but she just managed to push
her hand far enough to feel a nose. She was so relieved.
“OK, the head is coming, so all four of us hold onto the baby foal’s legs and
when the zebra pushes, we pull down towards her feet,” said Bells.
The gang positioned themselves holding onto the feet and waited. Moments
passed and then she pushed again and everyone pulled steadily. This time the
head appeared.
“Fantastic effort, gang”, cried James. “Next pull should have the foal out”.
They waited for a short while then the zebra pushed again and everyone pulled.
This time the foal came out but so quickly that everyone fell over backwards
which they found very funny.
James cleared the nostrils of the foal while Bells patted its chest to get it
breathing. The foal sneezed and the mummy zebra was finding the strength to
stand up so the gang walked quickly back to the lorry.
While all this was going on another lorry had caught their lorry up so there was
quite a crowd. As the gang approached the lorry, there was spontaneous
applause.
“Well done”. “Amazing”. “How did you guys learn to do that?” “I have never
seen anything like it!”
These were just a few of the things said by the watchers. Bells explained that
her mummy was a vet and had taught her and James how to deliver lambs.
Zebras were just bigger but much the same, she went on to explain.
They climbed back into the lorry and at that moment who should turn up but
Jane, the vet. The driver told Jane what had happened. On seeing the gang, she
said “I might have guessed it would be you lot. No other children that I know
could possibly have done that. You may well have saved not one but two lives
by your prompt action”.
“All in a day’s work”, said Harry.
