“James and Jackson, we will go into the wood and collect firewood. Girls you
can organise the fireplace. Use the bricks to stop the fire spreading”, said
Harry.
The boys went off into the wood.
“Phew, they’ve gone. Harry is so bossy”, said Bells.
“He means well”, said Amelia, “and we do need organising”.
The girls arranged the bricks so that they were two bricks high which provided a
platform for their pans.
Soon the boys returned, their arms loaded with sticks for the fire. Amelia took
charge of lighting the fire. She used a firelighter and neatly stacked the sticks
so that the flames soon caught hold. The fire slowly burst into life and after
some ten minutes, it crackled with delight.
“Please get some more wood as this will not be enough for the evening. Bigger
pieces would be great”, said Amelia. Off the boys went to find more wood.
“What shall we cook?”, asked Bells.
“Sausages, eggs, baked beans and toasted bread rolls”, said Ellie without giving
it much thought, because that was what she liked.
“Ok”, said Amelia, “then we need a frying pan, a pot and some toasting forks.
Can you find them, Ellie, please.” Ellie disappeared into the tent where the
food and pots and pans had been put. She rummaged around making a real
mess until she found what was needed and returned to the fire.
“I will cook the sausages, Ellie you toast the rolls, and Amelia you cook the
eggs as you are best at cracking them”, said Bells. They set to work.
Shortly, the boys returned with lots more wood.
“Oh wow, what a lovely smell”, said Jackson who by now was very hungry.
“Fetch some plates, then,” commanded Amelia.
Jackson fetched some plates, while James fetched some mugs and the
lemonade.
They gathered around the fire and had a splendid meal. All were very happy
and congratulated themselves on getting off to such a good start on their
expedition.
The boys washed up and then put the fire out. Everyone went to bed.
