              the  Huling family gave it strong support and it is now

              attended by over 100/students.
                     Tho teachers are the mother and sister of one

              of tho Syrian masters in the boys’ school at Maharak
               assisted by two local women, pupil teachers,    The
               curriculum is simple, roading, writing, arithmetic,
               sewing and painting.   The school is very popular.
                     The Education Committoe are now being asked
               to open a girls' school in Manama, which as a town,
               is more broad minded than Maharak.
                      One of tho arguments against the school which was

               put forward seriously, v/as that it would injure the
               girls’ chances of marriage as their looks would be
               criticized by female relations of intending suitors
               who 'would report unfavourably on their appearance.
                      Shia School.   Tho new Shia School was opened
               on the day following the Eid al Fitr by H. E. Shaikh
                                     Rs 1100/-
               Hamad.   The sum of Rs ilEyflftfl/- has been eell allotted

               at prosont for the new Manama.school and the small
               school at Suk Al Khamis.
                      The management of the school is in the hands of
               a committee of Shia merchants under the Presidency of
               Syed Ahmed bin Syed Alawi,
                      The Head-master is a young Bahsrani who v/as
               educated in Baghdad, his brother, and three Iraqis form
               the school staff.
                      The number of tho boys at present is 198, as
               many as the building v/ill hold.  The school is warmly

               supported by the Shia Qadis and all the local townspeople.
                      Persian Schools.   Owing to quarrels among the
               committee the old Persian Sohool divided into two schools
               during the yoar.   Both sohools are supported by the
               torsion Government and are said to be a oentre for Persian
