This year the students of Wattappola Central College

who faced the G.C.E. O/L and A/L Examinations were

supported by 185 undergraduates from the University of

Peradeniya who willingly volunteered. The programme

uplifted the knowledge of Mathematics, Science, English,

and some other subjects and prepared them for the

examinations. Tutorials were prepared for each subject

that was taught during the seminars. Each tutorial

included the important facts of the lesson, short

methods of memorization, past paper questions as well

as exercises relevant to the lessons. For the students to

get the most out of the tutorials, these tutorials were

uploaded to the blog of the Rotaract Club of the

University of Peradeniya for any student in the country

to download the relevant materials and to make use of

them for the Ordinary level examination.

In between the teaching sessions, motivational

programmes were organized to encourage the students

and to develop their enthusiasm for academic activities

as well as other extracurricular activities. To enhance the

reading habits of the students, books were donated to

the library of the school and stationary items were

donated to students who were not in a position to

purchase even the essential items.To develop an

interest in engaging in extracurricular activities, an

astronomical camp was conducted for the school

students as many students showed an interest in

studying astronomy.

This was a great opportunity as students from such

areas lack opportunities in their lifetime to have such an

experience. They received insights and subtle advice

from the Rotaractors on how they should adjust their

attitudes towards society, the environment, and the

country. The sustainability of the project will be ensured

by continuing it as a long-term initiative to ensure the

welfare of the students. The project committee kept in

constant touch with the students and followed up with

them until they sat for the O/L examinations to make

sure that they performed well in their exams.
