“Our purpose on earth may vary from one another. Yet, as
humans, we must understand the hardships of others and
cooperate wherever we can”.
Over more than four consecutive years, Rotaract UOP has
engaged in aiding children's homes. This time we were
already halfway through collecting donations when the
pandemic hit, and our plans collapsed since children's
homes were restricted for visitors.
Nevertheless, we shifted our approach and initiated a new
beginning; A webinar series for the children in SOS villages
of Piliyandala, Galle, Anuradhapura, Monaragala, and
Bethlshalam Children's house in Pilimathalawa.
We managed to conduct seven webinars via LEARN
Zoom, with a participation of around 250 children for
each session. In addition, a list of undergraduates from
across all faculties of UOP joined hands with us in
conducting sessions on personality, soft skills, mental
health, and well-being.
Motivated by "Sathkara phase one," the extended
attempt, "Sathkara phase two" is on the run, where we
target to uplift the mental status and well-being of elderly
people. Under phase two, we have planned on a book
launch with the creative participation from young writers
at Peradeniya, with the long-term objective of financially
assisting elders' homes.
Time seems grim; many have lost hope of a better future. In this context, the children at children's
homes and elders at elders' homes face severe difficulties in resisting anxiety. Therefore, we wanted
to impact positively and contribute to building their future; by letting them express and assist where
needed. Our attempt will not bring about a global change, yet it could change the world for one
person.
