“Yaluwa” is an annual signature community service
project initiated by the Rotaract District 3220 in order
to delight the young and naïve minds affected with
down syndrome and to provide a small contribution
towards the medical and moral support needed to
guide them in the fruitful future that lies ahead.
This immense event constituted of three phases
which were conducted in all three zones of District
3220, at Special Education Centre, Ampitiya, where
the Rotaract Club of University of Peradeniya was
given the chance to co-host the project along with all
the other Rotaract Clubs in Zone 2 including Rotaract
Clubs of, Kandy, Katugasthota Region, University of
Uva Wellassa, Kurunegala, Athugalpura, Neptune
Edification, Hatton Kotagala, and Peace city Hatton.
The heart-warming day was well spent with group activities
such as drawing & painting, a medical camp, a few sessions
of entertainment and an award ceremony. In addition,
breakfast and lunch were provided for the children, parents
as well as teachers. The significant pay-off that was expected
and achieved was to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day,
2021 whole heartedly by allowing these young minds, who
are affected by an unfortunate disability, to discover their
potential through arts and crafts and to allow them to
comprehend through our actions – one way or another –
that they are equally loved and cared for just like every other
individual in the society.
