LANGUAGE IS THE INFINITE USE OF FINITE MEANS
English language is an amalgamation of the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and
Writing. They are four capabilities that allow an individual to comprehend, produce, and
use the language in effective interpersonal communication. The Department of English
aims to develop these skills of every student in a comprehensive way with the help of
engaging and innovative activities. A wide range of activities have been organised such as
Just A Minute, Role Play, Fastest Finger First, Radio Show, Poetry Slam, Vocabulary
Bingo and Poetry Elocution. Students of grade 12 recreated ways of finding happiness in the
challenging times of the ongoing pandemic and created self-care guides for themselves and
their peers in the activity Recreating Happiness. They also presented in the e-classes the
remarkable self-taught skills they learnt during the lockdown like singing, cooking and
playing an instrument. Memories Galore prompted students of grade 11 to recall their favourite
memories and share them in the form of verse or narrative. In these trying times, the activity
promoted positivity and a spirit of camaraderie amongst the students. The skills of Listening and
Speaking are refined through Virtual English Lab. As a team the faculty believes in an
inter-disciplinary approach. English is integrated with Arts through activities like poster
making, collage making, slogan writing, designing of comic strips, display advertisement
and biographical sketch. Another collaborative endeavour that sought to enhance the
understanding of the students by highlighting the connection between various subjects is
Subject Enrichment Activity. The faculty collaborates with all academic subjects like
Science, Social Science, Chemistry, Political Science, Economics and Business Studies for
IX and XI. Extensive brainstorming sessions are held to do away with rote-learning and
think beyond the curriculum. Screening of documentaries, movie clips and tutorials helps the
learners to relate the text with self, society and art. The students are given a platform to display
their creative writing through the annual school magazine ‘Sterling’. Their works are also
published in noted newspapers like The Times of India and Hindustan Times. They evolve into
competent, confident and perceptive individuals through participation in various school
events as comperes, designers, choreographers, actors and script writers. This year, the young
literati of MJKPS brought laurels to the school by winning prizes in several Inter -School
Competitions.
