Chapter 6
One warm fall day, the Stars invited Mirabel and
family to take a hike, and then picnic on the Lake
Okanagan beach called Paul's Tomb. Sarah and Ashley
were in charge of snacks, fruit and bread. The Stars were
to bring sandwich fillings and other nibbles.
It was a good long walk uphill. Twinkle and Mirabel
talked all the way, making them forget that they were hot
and hungry. They discussed the bully at school, agreeing
that he might have settled down. The best way to handle
him seemed to be with careful kindness and firmness. As
we all know, this problem comes up sometimes for
children.
"I never had that happen before," said Twinkle. "I was
pretty scared, but I tried not to show it."
"Yes, I never know whether to hide it either. What
about when you are sad or anxious?" asked Mirabel.
"Well, I am used to keeping all that stuff hidden,
because of the way things are on Andalap. You know,
they are very strict about too much show of feeling.
