Retrospective case-control study of cardio-metabolic and Quality of Life (QoL) of Islamic

               Abstract:

The present meta-analysis suggests that obesity is associated with cardio-metabolic risk factors (CRFs)
such as type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. Therefore, finding an effective alternative to overcome
this problem is crucial. Intermittent Fasting (IF) had gained recognition as one of the solutions to this
situation. This study objective is to determine the effects of Islamic intermittent fasting (IIMF) in context
of Monday and Thursday sunnah fasting on cardio-metabolic parameters (Hb1Ac, lipoprotein profiles, liver
function test, blood pressure, heart rate). A total of 86 participants were recruited, which was divided into
two groups, control is the group of respondents that does not practise IIMF and case is the practitioners of
IIMF at least within 2 months prior. The biomedical sample collected was sent and analysed by BP
Healthcare Laboratory. The data obtained was analysed using SPSS version 23. In the lipid profile, the
results showed total cholesterol, LDL, and non-HDL in the IIMF group were low compared to the control
group, while no significant difference was detected in Triglycerides and Total Chol/HDL. Liver function
test showed significant difference only in A/G ratio while other indicators (Total protein, albumin, bilirubin,
ALT, AST, ALT, Gamma GT) showed no significant difference. In terms of Hb1Ac, blood test and heart
rate also showed no significant difference. In conclusion, the IIMF was able to improve certain indicators
in lipid profile and liver function test within a minimum 2 months duration. However, further study is
encouraged to be done in different study methods such as intervention study to investigate carefully and
accurately the effect of IIMF on cardiometabolic.
