Abstract:
The use of electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic health records (EHR) in healthcare
organizations have contributed greatly to delivering high-quality medical treatment to patients. Despite
advancement in technology, Klinik Diet of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) still uses the
conventional method (paper-based) to record their clients’ data which is time-consuming as only one
person can review the record at a time, prone to error, time loss in searching and obtaining the
information and not to mention security and privacy issues. As such, this study aims to describe the
research protocol in developing and validating an online nutritional database management system,
namely DietCARE, at the Klinik Diet, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). This project will be
conducted in three phases. A conceptual model of nutritional care databases will be developed in Phase
1 based on The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Care Process and Model (NCPM). The
configuration, initial testing, and custom development activities will be carried out in Phase 2. Outcome
analysis surveys assessing clinical acceptance and client satisfaction using pre and 3 months-post
implementations will be conducted in Phase 3. It is hypothesized that this online nutritional database
could be used to introduce new services or workflow in our healthcare setting, hence enabling our
healthcare practitioners in providing good quality nutritional care to their clients, especially UMT staff
and students who are the majority of the existing clients’ base.
