C. Encircling Grand Asuncion
The lack of appropriate road networks within the country is recognized.
Here, we will only provide a description of the projects closely related to
our endeavor. Encircling Grand Asuncion is one of them.
The four main roads entering the city are the following (See Map 7):
1. The Trans-Chaco coming from Bolivia joins the road coming from
Argentina at the bridge crossing over the Paraguay River. At the
exit, it enters the Grand Asuncion.
2. Road 3 enters the city at the north point. This road connects
the city with the northern provinces in the Eastern Region.
3. Road 2/7 called Central Highway is the main road which connects
Asuncion with Ciudad del Este. This highway is the busiest in the
country. At present 2,200 heavy trucks enter the city daily via this
road alone; it is expected to reach 12,500 in 15 years.
4. Road 1 connects Asuncion with the southern provinces and has
two entrances to the city, from the south and the west.
The map entitled “Ports of Grand Asuncion” included in the Appendices
shows the region as well as the above roads in more detail.
The project called Encircling Gran Asuncion has the objective of
alleviating the city’s traffic as well as optimizing the logistics by
connecting the above roads with a ring circling at about a 50-km. radius
around the city. This project will direct goods from the interior to a
Logistics Activity Zone (LAZ) located in Villeta as well as from Villeta to
the interior. The following map is taken from the IDB’s report.
