The Mathematics and Physics Department at Nilsen College has continued its strong
commitment to academic excellence throughout 2025. With a dedicated team of teachers, a
focus on structured learning, and ongoing curriculum development, the department has made
significant progress in raising student performance and strengthening learning programs.
DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
1. Academic Delivery & Teacher Commitment
The department comprises six passionate and highly qualified teachers, each bringing unique
strengths and expertise to their classrooms. Collectively, teachers have continued to uphold
high standards of lesson planning, classroom instruction, and student support. Their
professionalism, teamwork and willingness to go the extra mile have been key factors driving
student growth across all year levels.
A strong emphasis was placed on:
- Quality lesson delivery
- Effective classroom management
- Use of examples, exercises, and structured practice
- Providing remedial support and additional worksheets
- Ensuring alignment with the Learning and Teaching Program (LTP)
Lesson observations carried out in Term 1 and Term 2 reflected commendable strengths in
preparation, communication quality and classroom organisation. Opportunities for
improvement included broader use of teaching aids and incorporation of modern pedagogies
to enhance student engagement.
2. Student Performance & Assessment Trends
Internal Assessment 2025
Overall, the mid-year and annual examination analyses indicated steady progress in several
levels, with noticeable improvement in higher forms such as Year 13 Pure and Life
Mathematics. Some classes—particularly in the lower and middle years—continue to face
challenges with conceptual understanding, attendance and preparation.
External Examination Trends 23
Performance in the Fiji Year 12 and Year 13 external examinations in recent years shows:
- Consistent improvement in Life Mathematics, with pass rates reaching 100% in 2024.
