What a Christian Believes
ago and those now) as orphans.
As Jesus spoke about leaving this earth He explained how
they (and we) would be cared for by Him John 16 v 6,7
'Because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled
your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is to your
advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away the
Helper will not come to you; but if I go I will send Him to
you.'
In using the term Helper, Jesus was using one of the many
names used for the HOLY SPIRIT. Two others are the
COUNSELOR and the COMFORTER. Throughout the Bible
there are many different names used to describe the HOLY
SPIRIT.
The reason Jesus said this would be better is because, whilst
Jesus as a man on earth could be in only one place at a time,
the HOLY SPIRIT can be everywhere at once. In this way,
every christian anywhere in the world, may have the
presence of God in their lives at the same time.
One of the first works that the HOLY SPIRIT does is found in
the same chapter in John 16 v8 'When He comes, He will
convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and
righteousness and judgement.'
Every person who is a disciple of Jesus, that is a christian,
will have been challenged by the Holy Spirit about their sin
and the need to be saved. When Jesus speaks to people, in
their conscience, their heart, their mind, it is the Holy Spirit
who is speaking on Jesus behalf.
This is just the beginning of the work of the Holy Spirit in
a believer.
