WHEN IT BECAmE UNETHICAl TO GO TO WORk

during eight weeks in the spring and eight weeks in
the fall. At the beginning of the year, we signed up
so much new business, mainly baseball accounts,
that I knew that we were going into our most
profitable and best baseball season ever!
Then, two weeks before our opening day,
disaster struck. I was hearing something about a
virus. I was paying attention but not really that

much because I thought, “we have had viruses
before and we get over them.” Fast forward two
weeks from that thought and I went from making
a steady income to making zero money. I went
from having ten full-time employees that made
my business run to having to lay every one of them
off on a Sunday night. I remember making that

dreaded phone call to each of them and it felt like
a knife being slashed through my heart. Never in
all the years of being a small business owner had
I ever had to lay off a full-time employee. As days
turned in to weeks, I came to the realization that
having any baseball season was probably slim to
none. Now here is where it really gets bad. We
work double shifts in the spring and fall seasons
and we make our income for the entire year in

those months, and I knew that if I didn’t have a
spring season that I would not be able to bring
back any of my employees in the summer. In the
