                      APPLICATION OF SIX SIGMA IN QUALITY CONTROL OFCHEMICAL

                                                        LABORATORY

                  ABSTRACT

                        Background: Sigma Metrics is a tool to determine the quality of an assay, which can
                  be quantified, improved and monitored. DMAIC is a core tool usually used to drive Six

                  Sigma  Projects  to  improve,  and  optimized  processes  or  designs.  We  combined  Sigma

                  Metrics and DMAIC in effective controlling and improving quality of biochemistry assays.

                        Objectives: Evaluate the Sigma Metrics of biochemical tests; analyze the root causes

                  of poor quality; propose and implement and assess the efficiency of improving actions.
                        Methods:  This  research  is  a  prospective  study.  The  IQC  and  EQA  data  of

                  biochemistry assays on 3 devices at the Laboratories of the Hospital of the University of

                  Medicine and Pharmacy at Campus 2 and Hoan My Saigon General Hospital that were

                  collected  at  3  time  points  from  July  2020  to  June  2021,  were  used  for  Sigma  Metric

                  calculation.
                        Results: At the baseline, of the 60 tests, 30 tests (50%) met international standards

                  (Sigma ≥ 6); 7 tests (12%) achieved 5 Sigma, 7 tests (12%) achieved 4 Sigma. 16 tests

                  (26%) < 4 Sigma; and were the target of this improvement project. After improvement,

                  percentage  of  tests  meeting  international  standards  increased  from  64.9%  to  77.2%  in

                  device  1;  from  62.1%  to  83.3%  in  device  2  and  from  36.8%  to  44.1%  in  device  3.
                  Percentage of tests lower than allowable standards (Sigma < 3) decreased from 31.6% to

                  7.9% for device 3. There were no tests lower than standard on the other 2 devices after

                  improvement.
