SEVERAL LEWIS FOYS:
A review of available U.S. Census records determined that there were several
LEWIS FOYS who lived in the North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia
areas during the times in which we were interested. Which one was the actual
son of JAMES FOY, SR and how would we find out?
A trip to the Salt Lake City Mormon Geneological Library would solve that
problem. That library is probably the most complete geneological library in the
world. In addition to the thousands of books on their shelves the Salt Lake City
library has microfilm of most public records from nearly every county in the
United States going back many decades. But, which county records would one
search?
The U.S. Census records listed LEWIS FOYs in the following years in the
following counties:
1810 Jones County, N.C.
1820 New Hanover County, N.C.
1830 Bibb County, GA
1840 Meriwether County, GA & Craven County, N.C.
1850 Meriwether County, GA & Craven County, N.C.
1860 New Hanover County, N.C.
1870 New Hanover County, N.C. & Terrrell County, GA
Many microfilm records for pertinant counties in North Carolina, and Georgia
were reviewed which mentioned the name LEWIS FOY. One thing being looked
at in each of those records was the mention of other names with which we might
be familiar for our LEWIS FOY would have been closely associated with other
members of the JAMES FOY, SR family.
For example, In the Jones County, NC deed book#K on page 164 there is a
reference to an event in 1808 where ENOCH FOY sold to LEWIS FOY for fifty
pounds “a certain piece of land.........(described) the patent of which was granted
to THOMAS FOY October 27th, 1784.” The transaction was witnessed by
MORRIS FOY. (Remember: in the 1810 census for Jones County, there was a
