TWO BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN JAR-
FORM SNUFF BOTTLES
1740-1800
The first of hexalobed section, with a waisted neck
and slightly rolled lip, painted with a dense overall
design of lions playing with brocade balls against
a floral ground, the recessed foot painted with
a further lion; the second of octagonal section,
with a waisted neck and flared mouth, each facet
painted with leafy lingzhi sprigs, the recessed foot
inscribed with a six-character Yongzheng mark.

Two similar snuff bottles to the second bottle in
this lot, also with six-character Yongzheng marks,
are illustrated in Hugh Moss, Victor Graham
and Ka Bo Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff
Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection,
vol. 6, Hong Kong, 2008, nos. 1370 and 1371.
As noted by the authors, those examples have
flared mouths not intended for stoppers and were
probably converted into snuff bottles, unlike the
first bottle in this lot, which does have a broad lip.

A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘LION’
SNUFF BOTTLE
1800-1900
Potted to resemble a miniature jar, the rounded
197 sides finely painted with two bats and three lions
amid clouds, the top of the stopper with a further
lion beneath a flaming scroll, the interior floor
marked with the character nai, the foot marked
with a circle enclosed within the foot ring.

‘DRAGON’ SNUFF BOTTLES
1820-1880
Each of cylindrical form gently flaring towards the
base, surmounted by tubular necks with rolled
rims and recessed foot; the first painted with
two dragons contesting a flaming pearl against a
deep blue sky; the second painted with a dragon
chasing a flaming pearl.
