A YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE ‘NARRATIVE’ SNUFF BOTTLE
Master of the Rocks School, 1780-1850
Of rounded square shape with an oval foot ring and short tubular neck,
the yellowish-green stone with a patch of russet skin, carved in low
relief with a scene depicting the start of the friendship between Boya
and Ziqi, with Boya playing the qin on a boat while Ziqi listens from a
bridge, the dark brown inclusions in the stone skillfully worked into the
design.

A hallmark of the ‘Master of the Rocks’ School, is its distinctive use of
the skin on yellow jade, a material much favored by the School. The
decorative carving is almost always confined to the russet skin with the
yellow jade left unadorned to better display the beauty of its color.

A WHITE JADE ‘BASKET-WEAVE’ SNUFF BOTTLE
1750-1850
Of flattened ovoid form, supported on an oval foot ring and
surmounted by a waisted neck with a flat lip, the sides carved with a
pattern resembling a woven basket, the stone of an even white color.
