DARE TO BE A.L.I.V.E. - DON’T BE A D.A.S.H.
You can choose to rate or measure your speci c thoughts, feelings, and
actions. You can also choose to rate your totality, your entire personhood. But
you’d better not!
If you haven’t done something well, you can justi ably and bene cially
criticize your poor performance—but just as bene cially you can steadfastly
refuse to lambaste yourself. View your performance in a realistic but self-
accepting way.
The same with other people: honestly appraise their performances. Even, at
times, express constructive criticism of what they do. But don’t go the extra
s
i
step and insist that someone “bad” for doing badly.
Self Labeling
Review these examples of labeling yourself.
Check the statements that re ect your tendency to engage in self-rating.
[ ] I failed, therefore I am a failure.
[ ] I am rejected; therefore I am an unlovable reject.
[ ] I acted foolishly, therefore I am Fool.
[ ] I didn’t know this information; therefore I am a dummy or an idiot.
[ ] I gave in; therefore I am a weakling and never act strongly.
[ [ I acted insensitively, therefore I am Jerk, fool, or rotten person.
[ ] I did badly, therefore I am no good.
[ ] I don’t like my choices, therefore I am trapped forever.
[ ] I can’t see the solution now, therefore I am hopeless,
[ ] I’ll never be able to resolve this problem.
[ ] I didn’t try; therefore I am a key and worthless person.
[ ] I lost, therefore I am a loser and will always be a loser.
