Study Section 13: The Sexual part of Marriage
13.1 Connect
Singles who are studying the topic of marriage can hardly wait to get to the topic of sex. It is
because most individuals look forward to enjoying this blessing of married life. But married couples
know from experience, that the aspect of sex in a marriage can also be a source of great tension,
irritation, disappointment, and rejection. And many of the problems that arise are simply a lack of
understanding. It is important to learn important principles about sex from our Creator’s instruction book.
13.2 Objectives
1. The student should be able to explain that because sex can be either helpful or harmful to our
marriage relationship, it is important to understand and obey God’s instructions.
2. The student should be able to explain how God created the husband and the wife differently will also
help us to better fulfill our mate’s sexual needs.
13.3 The Sexual Part of Marriage
(Some of the material in this lesson comes from Dennis Rainey’s “Weekend to Remember” marriage
conference booklet.)
Sex is an important part of marriage as God intended it. God designed sex to be wonderful and
pure.
Genesis 1:27 “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created
them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 2:24 “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and
they become one flesh.”
Sex was not the cause of the fall of mankind. Unfortunately, the church has sometimes taught a negative
view of sex inside marriage. This is not biblical. God created Adam and Eve in the garden, commanded them
to be fruitful and multiply, and he pronounced it “very good”. God designed sex to be the wonderful
physical climax of the spiritual and emotional intimacy between the husband and wife. It is like the frosting
on the cake in a healthy relationship.
But sin has negatively affected sex in our sinful world. Satan now uses sex to destroy men and women. What
God intended to be a wonderful and enjoyable experience of love between a husband and wife, Satan has
used to cause bitterness and resentment. He uses sex to destroy the self-confidence of both the husband
and the wife. He wants women to compare themselves with the beautiful models of this world. This causes
women to feel discouraged and ashamed of their own bodies? And men compare themselves with other
men as well.
