Reason To Sing

                              Chapter Forty-Four

                                  Rejected

“Do you really have to take that gig tomorrow night?”
I follow Gord in my housecoat as he drags his hockey gear
into the car. I am disappointed but I refuse to nag. I make a
concerted effort to sound loving. “You only just got home and
you’ve been gone for two weeks. It would be nice to have some
time with the three of us. Keldon needs that.” Heck, I need
          that!
“Well, you know I don’t really have a choice,” he explains,
heaving his heavy hockey bag into the trunk. “You know I need
to take this gig, Kelita. Plus, I’m playing with some new guys
so it’s a good connection for me to have. It could lead to more
work.” He gently closes the trunk. I love that this man always
          keeps his cool.
“Okay. I know. You’re right. I get it.” I wrap my housecoat
          tighter around my shivering body.
“I’ll see you later today.” He kisses me tenderly on the
          forehead.
“Later? You’re not coming home after hockey?” I pull back,
          surprised.
“No, I have a session. Then I have to go to Long &
          McQuade’s. I thought I told you?”
“No. You didn’t.” I know I am starting to sound a little
          ticked. Mostly because I am.
Gord says nothing. He just gets in the car and drives off
like he’s a normal husband off to work for a normal day at a
normal office. But there is nothing at all normal about the life
