federal IRS website, IRS.gov, is the home of information about
EINs and how to apply for them.
According to IRS.gov, the person applying for an EIN must
have a valid personal Taxpayer Identification Number such as a
Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification
Number. This is designed to ensure that you are real and that the
EIN is not being applied for by a fabricated person or an alias.
Having any other information you may need, such as your
business’s mailing address, is also a good idea.
When you have your Taxpayer Identification Number and
business mailing address on hand, you must apply for an EIN by
filling out the IRS’s online EIN application. The IRS website does
not allow you to save your progress on this application, so it’s a
good idea to set aside some time when you can sit down at your
computer and finish this application from start to finish.
Once the application is done, you will want to download,
save, and print your EIN application confirmation screen for
your records. 4
You can also apply for an EIN by filling out and snail mailing
paper forms to the IRS if you do not have a computer with an
Internet connection, but these paper forms can take weeks to be
processed by the IRS and can take much longer to correct if any
errors have been made in the application. For this reason, I
recommend filing online if possible.
Once your articles of incorporation have been approved by
your state government and your EIN has been approved by the
federal government, congratulations! Your baby business is now
a legal entity eligible for its own bank account and business
credit lines!
There are just a few more things you will want to have to
build your image as a reputable company and ensure proper
handling of your business finances.
