WORKERS’ COMPENSATION
All the employees of Mission are covered by the workers’ compensation insurance program at no
cost to the employees, unless the employee has opted out due to specific state laws. This program
provides for certain medical costs associated with covered injuries or illnesses sustained in the
course of employment that requires medical, surgical or hospital treatment. The program also
provides some income replacement during the time that an employee is disabled due to a work-
related injury. Subject to applicable legal requirements, workers’ compensation provides benefits
after a short waiting period. Employees should contact the People Operations Department for
additional details.
Any employee who is unable to work due to an injury sustained in the course of employment is
entitled to workers’ compensation leave until the employee is able to return to work or until his/her
disability is determined to be permanent. Workers’ compensation leave is unpaid. An employee
on workers’ compensation leave can use accrued PTO during such an absence from work.
Any employee who sustains a work-related injury or illness must immediately report the incident
immediately to his/her supervisor/manager, the Safety Department or to the People Operations
Department or within twenty-four (24) hours of the occurrence. No matter how minor an on-the-
job injury may appear, it is important that it be immediately reported to Mission. This will enable
an eligible employee to qualify for coverage as quickly as possible. Employees who report a work-
related injury or illness in good faith will not be retaliated against for their report, filing a
subsequent workers’ compensation claim, hiring an attorney to assist them in the workers’
compensation process, or engaging in any other activity protected by law.
Neither Mission nor its insurance carrier will be liable for the payment of workers’ compensation
benefits for injuries or illnesses that occur during an employee’s voluntary participation in any off-
duty recreational, social or athletic activity sponsored by Mission or injuries or illnesses sustained
from another job.
Return to Work Duty: An employee who has suffered a workers’ compensation injury or illness
will be permitted to return to work only when he/she has furnished to Mission a physician’s written
statement stating whether or not the employee is capable of returning to full or modify duty with
or without accommodations. Mission reserves the right to require any employee absent from work
because of a work-related injury or illness to be examined by a Mission-appointed physician.
REINSTATEMENT RIGHTS AND TERMINATION FOLLOWING
APPROVED LEAVE
Statutory leaves of absence (family and medical leave, military leave, jury duty leave, and certain
other leaves) are granted pursuant to applicable state and federal laws. Subject to certain
exceptions, employees taking leave under those laws have a right to reinstatement to their position
held before the leave or to an equivalent position, provided they return to work at or before the end
of the statutory leave.
