The Contested Modernities: Postcolonial Architecture
in South East Asia was held at the Haus de Statistik
in Berlin, Germany, on 10 September 2021. The
Southeast Asian modernism theme with a particular
focus on Visit Singapore with its first vaccinated travel
lanes with Germany.
An eye-catching showcase of Singaporean architectural
photographer, Mr Darren Soh, an NYAA Gold Award
holder (1998 Cohort) and a founding member of
the NYAA Young Photographers’ Network (YPN) on
Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) Mr Laurence Bay, Ambassador of Singapore to
flats was the highlight of the exhibition. Germany showing the work of Mr Darren Soh, NYAA
Gold Award holder (1998 Cohort) at Berlin, Germany.
Mr Laurence Bay, Ambassador of Singapore to
Germany, invited Mr Soh to showcase his architectural
photography work on Singapore’s public housing
to commemorate the historical event during the
COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibition was very well
attended in Berlin and has made Singapore proud.
Singapore’s Leadership In Foreign Universities
Dr Mustafa Izzuddin, a Senior Lecturer with the
National University of Singapore and an NYAA Gold
Award holder (2002 Cohort), has been appointed
Director of International Relations Studies,
Beaconhouse National University of Pakistan and
concurrently appointed Associate Professor and
Executive Director of the Centre for Southeast Asian
Studies at the O.P.Jindal Global University in India.
Prof Shahid Hafeez Kardar, Vice-Chancellor of the
Beaconhouse National University of Pakistan, an
economist who served as Finance Minister and
Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, was very
impressed by Dr Mustafa’s leadership in youth
leadership development in Singapore. Moreover, he
was impressed by how the NYAA nurtured him over
the years. NYAA is proud that many of our Gold Award
holders have done well and flying Singapore’s flag
high wherever they are based.
