CFS(H) is the last remaining flying
instructor training unit under full
command of the CFS. The unit is
based at RAF Shawbury and em-
bedded within 1 FTS. CFS(H) train
Qualified Helicopter Instructors (QHIs) for all three services
and for foreign exchange aircrew. They also train Qualified
Helicopter Crewmen Instructors (QHCIs) for the RAF and 22
Gp. 40 QHIs and 16 QHCIs are trained each year in order to
sustain the various training units within 22 Gp and the frontline
Operational Conversion Units.
The relatively small group of tri-
service instructors contains a wealth
of experience (approximately 85,000
fg hrs of which 30,000 are instruc-
tional hours!).
CFS(H) provide support to the
Red Arrows throughout the
display season by flying ‘Red
10’ to the display locations
inaccessible to fixed wing air-
craft.
