“Samaria Williams -- that name rings a bell.” Sergeant
Miller said. “However, you can pick up your money after train-
ing today.
Standing in front of the soldiers with his polished shoes
and trimmed mustache, Sergeant Miller turned his attention
to the trainees.
“Today, I will be teaching you the defense technique of
hand-to-hand combat. My father taught me that you might
have to take a punch to give a punch. I learned quickly that
that was very foolish when I allowed a young man back in
high school to provide a punch while I gave a punch. Unfor-
tunately, my blow missed, and his punch connected, leaving
me with a broken nose.”
The team laughed softly.
Sergeant Miller instructed each soldier to pick a partner.
Each soldier in training picked a partner. He then proceeded
to teach them everything he knew about defensive hand-to-
hand combat. The soldiers in training learned quickly.
“Very good soldiers, very good.” Sergeant Miller com-
mented as he complimented the trainees. “This is one of the
best soldiers in training teams that I’ve seen in boot camp thus
far. Tomorrow I will be teaching you offensive hand to hand
combat.”
“I need three laps before we end training today.” “Now!”
Drill Sergeant Miller yelled.
As the soldiers in training took off for their run, Sergeant
Miller turned to Sergeant Jackson and asked, “What do you
think?”
“I’m very impressed. This is one of the best teams I’ve
seen come through this boot camp in a long time,” said Ser-
geant Jackson. “And that young lady, she’s strong and quite
impressive. I’ve seen her face somewhere before, but with no
hair on her head, it’s hard to tell.”
