c. Transitional animal species
The animals in the transitional region (Sulawesi) have characteristics similar to
those of the Oriental and Australian regions, for example, hogs deer, anoa, maleo,
komodo dragons, cuscus.

D. Human Activities That Disrupt Biodiversity
Human activities can reduce biodiversity. Until now, various types of plants and
animals are threatened with extinction and some of them have become extinct. Indonesia
has lost several important animals, for example the Bali tiger. Currently the animal has
never been found again, possibly extinct.
Animals such as the one-horned rhinoceros, Bali starlings, and pangolins are also
threatened with extinction. Not to mention several types of insects, reptiles, fish and
aquatic animals, which are no longer found in our environment. The extinction of
biodiversity is thought to be caused by several factors :
1. Habitat destruction.
Habitat destruction is believed to be the main cause of the extinction of organisms. If
the habitat is damaged then the organism does not have a suitable place to live. Habitat
damage can be caused because ecosystems are changed their function by humans, for
example, forests are cut down to become agricultural land. These human activities
result in decreased diversity of ecosystems, species and genes.
