Send the generic fliers out to prospective private label cli
ents and have them available to hand out at trade shows.
2. Call the company's corporate headquarters and try to locate
the appropriate contact. Asking for someone in "merchan
dising" or "new product development" should lead you to
the right person within their corporate structure.
3. When you have reached the right contact, ask if he would
be interested in learning about your product (or line) and
discussing private label opportunities. If he says yes, but
nothing further, have your graphic artist make that sample
mockup quickly.
4. Put a press kit together with the sample and send it off.
Remind him that the mockup is rough and the final product
would have the quality and finish that they expect. Include
any testimonials about your product and any press material
(if your product has been featured in a magazine editorial)
that you have. If a company is going to put its name on your
product, they will need to be sure it is going to be up to
par with the quality their customers expect. This is a seri
ous partnership and you will need to prove yourself to the
buyer.
5. Follow up with the buyer and ask the following questions:
Do you see the product as a nice addition to your current
offerings? Would you want an exclusive on either the fra
grance or the size, shape, or color (meaning, that particular
style will not be sold anywhere else)? What else can I make
for you as a product extension utilizing our specialties?
6. Find a way to meet their demand by talking to your manu
facturer, designer, and packaging source. It might be ben
eficial to put your graphic artist directly in touch with them
to discuss the design specifics, especially for technologi
cal reasons. Keep communication lines open by letting the
account know you can customize as much as they would
like.
