Step 8. Make the Most of Your Marketing Efforts 1 63
designer Isaac Mizrahi designs an affordable line of clothing avail
able only at Target. The key to maintaining your brand name is to
include it somewhere on the product, by labeling it with a tag say
ing, "Made for Company A by Company B," just as Mizrahi does.
Moisture Jamzz has been able to benefit from private labeling
while still maintaining exposure for our brand name by having
the inner labels read "Moisture Jamzz for Bath &: Body Works," for
example. This business-to-business marketing is very lucrative .
Once your product becomes part of their line, you benefit from
their established market share and all of a sudden, you have a new
audience in their large customer base.
How to Approach a Big Corporation about Private Labeling
Find a company or retailer where your product would fit in per
fectly with their merchandise. If they only sell items under their
own brand name, you need to:
l. Figure out a system of private labeling that will work for
your product. For example, if you sell the best all-natural
soy candles and you want to private label them for a big
name spa, talk with your graphic artist about creating other
artwork to complement another company's brand image on
your packaging. Your graphic designer could start by mak
ing a flier that shows your product(s) with the words "Put
Your Logo Here" on your packaging. The package should
look generic so buyers are not distracted by your artwork
and design.
If a company is interested, your designer can take the
company's actual logo either from a product that you buy
or sometimes from their website and make a mockup that
shows what you can do exclUSively for their company brand.
This mockup will immediately feel like a customized prod
uct and makes it easier for the buyer to see how it could fit
right into their line.
