Use and control of MEWP’s
• MEWP’s must have a thorough inspection within the past 6
months, weekly inspection, plus a pre-use inspection.
Documentation to be held in document holder with operating
manual.
• Operator and spotter must be trained in the use of the particular
machine. (Spotter requirements set out in MEWP Spotters VS).
• Ground conditions must be suitable for the type of machine.
3. Working at Height
• Never operate machines outside of manufacturer’s guidelines
i.e. overloading, as a crane, carrying materials on handrails etc.
• Be aware of weather restrictions, particularly wind.
• MEWP permit required for each machine. This must set out the
exclusion zone and any access restrictions required. Permit
authorized by Jacobs Area CS.
• Rescue procedure must be in place in the event of the Operator
becoming ill or the machine malfunctioning.
• Agreed procedure must be in place for operating through
restricted areas i.e. doorways.
• Be aware of live services within the area.
• Pinch points to be labelled.
• Ensure clips are in place where machines have collapsible
handrails.
• 100% tie-off to suitable anchor point in all MEWP’s.
• Gate must remain closed when machine is in use.
• Don’t store any items around the controls that could impede use.
