Welfare facilities – Canteen/mess room
• Sites must provide hygienic facilities where
employees can prepare hot food and drink.
• Clean drinking water should be provided
along with suitable cups. In hot climates
water should be stored and chilled to avoid
bacterial growth.
6. Welfare and Health
• Canteens/mess rooms must be provided
with enough tables and chairs to
accommodate those employees who will use
them.
• If a site cannot accommodate all staff in the
canteen/mess room breaks should be
staggered.
• Welfare facilities should be well lit, heated
and ventilated. In hot climates air-
conditioning should be installed.
• Major projects should be able to provide a
fully catered canteen service.
• Satellite facilities must be to the same
standard as those in the main compound.
