Page 20 - How Sophie Grumble Guts Got Her Name
P. 20
At bed time, she was placed into a dog bed in a room with all
those dogs she’d met that day. She’d never shared a room with
other dogs, and she was scared. She cried and scratched at the
door. The lady came and put her back into bed and stayed for a
little while, patting her and stroking her ears but as soon as the
lady left, she cried and scratched the door again, I don’t want to
be in here, she cried. I’m scared. I don’t know these dogs. I want
to go home.
The lady came back and put her back in her bed. Come on Sophie,
she said, not unkindly. This is where you live now. You settle
down and have a sleep and you’ll feel much better in the morning.
But Sophie would not be soothed. It had all been just too much.
At 4am, the lady finally decided to take Sophie into her bed as
she just needed to get some sleep. As both Sophie and the lady
were exhausted, they both fell asleep until it was time to get up
at 6.30am.
