THE CONCEPT OF EDUCATION IN MINANG
TRADITIONS
A. Education Concept
Adat in the context of Minangkabauan as used in the
meaning of culture in a broader sense. Minang adat is not a formal
educational institution such as a school or university, on the
contrary, adat is a culture which contains teachings that govern
individual and collective life. In this paper, the author tries to
reveal the concept of education contained in adat. There are several
elements of education that are elaborated in relation to education
as a concept in the context of Minangkabau traditional and socio-
cultural traditions. Among the most important elements discussed
are the foundations, objectives, materials and methods of
education, while other supporting elements are discussed in
addition.
Ideal Man According to Minang CustomsIn order to
examine the concept of the ideal human according to Minang
customs, of course, it is necessary to clarify which period the
concept of adat is referring to, because according to the author
there are three periods of development of Minang customs: First,
the period before the arrival of Islam. In this period the existence
