e. Egalitarian; Mamangan adat mentions tagak samo
high, duduak samo randah. (standing the same height,
sitting the same low). The Minang community adheres
to the principle of life which views humans as having
equal degrees. Every human being has the same social
status. Therefore one should be treated the same as
everyone else. This view raises the understanding of
equal rights among members of the community which
is manifested in the form of:
➢ consensus; Mamangan adat states: Nan bana kato
saiyo, nan rajo kato consensus. (Seiya said the
truth, the king said consensus). An agreement must
be reached through deliberation, meaning that the
attitude of the problem is resolved with a deep
understanding.
➢ Accept differences of opinion; As stated in the
traditional proverb: basilang wood in a stove, baitu
api mangko iduik. (cross the wood in the stove, so
the fire can live). The Minang community believes
that agreement with deep understanding can only
be reached by accommodating opinions from
different angles.
