people to investigate and study natural phenomena. Both have the
same root, it is stated in the following verse:
"Indeed, concerning the occurrence of the heavens
and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day,
these are verses that must be studied by people of
understanding." (Surah 3 : 190)
"Why do they not pay attention to the camel, how it
was created; And heavens, how it is raised; and the
mountains how it is established; and the earth how it was
developed; So give warning, for You are only a warner."
(Surah 88:17-21)
The verses mentioned above make it clear that the religion
of Islam instructs its people to think about investigating the
universe, and this nature is a verse or sunatullah. Sunatullah is the
most basic customary principle in Minang custom called adat nan
sabananyo adat. This is what makes the religious attitude of the
Minang people more fundamental.
Regarding the unification of religion and customs, this is
described in the Minang traditional petitih proverb:
