Second, open, responsive and flexible; On the idea or
understanding of renewal. Open, means giving an opportunity for
a new thought to enter. Responsive, meaning that indigenous
peoples will answer and evaluate all ideas that come. If a new idea
changes the customary principle (adat nan babuhua dies) then the
idea will be eliminated by itself. And flexible, meaning that custom
reflects that what should not be changed is only principles, while
custom which has a sudden conclusion can be changed (flexible)
because it is flexible that the people are free to seek new
knowledge and experiences, no matter where they are. That's why
the Minang people can live wherever they are, the adat mamangan
states: where the earth is stepped on, disinan langik is upheld.
(where the earth is stepped on, there the sky is upheld).
From the reasons above, it is clear that the Islam that came
later and was not rejected by the Minang community was because
Islam has teachings which are also the basic principles of Minang
customs, so that Islam enters like it is in its own home. This means
that adat contains doctrines that are already Islamic, but because
Islamic teachings are more complete, Islam brings added value.
Like the belief in a single power behind the existence of God as the
creator.
