Accessible Soils and Sustainable Environments (ASASE) Project (Ghana)
The VSLA-CHILD methodology is a child labour remediation initiative that tackles
child labour in cocoa-producing communities using a community-driven approach. The
implementation of the methodology is the 6th intervention under the Accessible Soils and
Sustainable Environments (ASASE) initiative, which offers a holistic approach to supporting
farmers, communities, and forest remnants in the landscape. The integration of the VSLA-
CHILD methodology into the ASASE project aimed to tackle the intersectional nature of
climate change, poverty, and gender.
2400 farmers were expected to have increased access to microcredit, improve their
savings culture and income diversity, as well as be supported as farming households to
develop self-help measures to protect children and remediate child labour using bottom-
up approaches. 6 PDA field officers were responsible for the formation and training of the
VSLA groups.
