P. 49
Evidently, there is a lot that needs to be done to promote poetry teaching and learning in the
education system of Namibia. Therefore, the study made the following recommendations:
By considering the key challenges identified, it can be said that teachers and school
management have tried over the past years to make poetry successful in schools.
However, the curriculum needs to be revised to allocate enough time and resources to
poetry education.
The management of education and policy makers should carry out an assessment of the
teaching aids required for the teachers to be used effectively and efficiently in the
education system.
There is also a need for the Ministry of Higher Education to introduce a program that
trains student teachers specifically in poetry as a field of study alone and not a
combination with other literature. When such trained students graduate and join the
teaching field, they will focus on poetry education alone so they will have enough time
for their job.
Program assessment and teaching methodologies could be reconsidered to incorporate
such methods, strategies and techniques, which would first target development of
students’ linguistic competence rather than their literary competence.
English poetry (literature) course designers need to provide learning materials suitable
for as low as elementary levels of proficiency in poetry. English literature is very
helpful in this respect as it provides ready-made materials - original or adapted - that
can appeal to any level of proficiency.
This study finally recommends that future study focus on the assessments about the
support that student teachers receive from the school management in this difficult
subject and how effective such support has been to them.
1.4 Summary

of the main findings as well as the recommendations for future action plans concerning the
