CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1.1 Introduction
This final chapter of the study concluded and summarised the entire finding of the study. The
chapter was divided into two sections, namely, conclusion and recommendations. Both the
conclusion and recommendations were based on the findings of the study. The conclusion
section summarised the findings of the study, while recommendations set a pathway for future
actions to improve on the challenges student teachers encountered in teaching poetry in English
as a Second Language as well as suggestions for future studies.
1.2 Conclusions
Poetry is an important aspect of the language in education. Poetry helps to build learners’
interest, which helps them to interact freely without any hesitation, is the base of language
learning (Mittal, 2016). We are aware that students hesitate in speaking a second language, as
they are not sure of accuracy and fluency. Hence it was mentioned earlier in this study, teaching
poetry is one of the most important activities in English as a second language. Studies revealed
that poetry is considered as a key element of many literature curricula around the world

in teaching poetry in schools. Some of the key findings are summarized as follows:
The study findings disclosed that student teachers experienced various challenges in teaching
poetry in English as a second language. Firstly, the data collected in the study indicated that
there was lack of interest in poetry lessons among learners. This resulted in teaching and
learning difficulties that posed a major challenge for the student teachers to conduct their
planned lessons.
Sufficient time allocation is very important for teaching and learning to fully materialize. When
more time is provided for the delivery of lessons, the learning outcomes tend to be better.
Research participants expressed that the was insufficient time allocated for the Poetry lessons
considering the huge amount of content that needed to be covered as prescribed in the syllabus

The shortage of or the lack of teaching resources was another major challenge experienced by
student teachers. Lack of accessing teaching resources for poetry lesson was another major
challenge that hindered learning and teaching poetry. Some student teacher respondents
