Market dominance
Kim: As far as I know, Korea’s know-how is quite advanced in the field of robotics.
Smith: There’s no doubt about that. Anyway, we have decided to approach WORLD first. That’s
why we’re here now. We hope that you will accommodate our offer.
Kim: Why did you select us first? I’m sure that you have other options. Do you have any par-
ticular reason on why you decided to go to us first? I’m also curious to know how you heard
about us.
Smith: Well, while there are several manufacturers of advanced robots in Korea, we were drawn
to WORLD because we’ve only heard favorable comments about your products, but we’ve
never actually seen the results. We got comments from experts in the field. You enjoy a very
good reputation in the business, and we were enticed to come to you.
Kim: Thank you very much for your favorable comments. It took us years to establish a good
name for ourselves. We are now reaping the rewards of our hard work and quality service.
You have been very generous with your comments and we are elated. Of course, we will be
very willing to help you with all your business concerns. We hope that this is the beginning of
a good partnership. I can assure you that you made the right choice by coming to us.
1. Is your company dominating the market now? Why do you say so?
Sample answer:
In a way, I can say that we are. Our company may not be the number one company in
the field, but I’m proud to say that we are part of the top ten biggest companies in the
field. I think this is already a big achievement.
2. What are the pluses and minuses of having market dominance?
Sample answer:
Of course, the biggest plus is the profit and the good reputation that comes with be-
ing the dominant name in the industry. The down side to it is that we always have to
meet the high expectations of the market. We also cannot afford to be lax. We have to
maintain our top post.
