               Competitive basis

Chang: Once customers purchase our products, we fully guarantee an after-service or a warranty
                  service.
Tom: But compared with Japanese-made electronic products, we still find yours expensive. Why
is that? Aren’t the Japanese the authority in this field?
Chang: Some people still have that assumption. I’m not sure if these are stereotypes. However,
we still think that our products are the best to be found anywhere especially when you con-
                  sider quality, design, and reliability.
Tom: Well, I agree with you, Mr. Chang. I’m very impressed with the efficiency of your new item.
I think this will be a big hit in the market. It has outdone the capabilities of the leading items
today. The future seems bright for you.
Chang: Thanks, Mr. Tom. Incidentally, we won an honor prize at the International Computer
Show in Houston in a competition with Japanese products last month. I think, this just goes
to show that we have made great improvements. We hope that this will translate well in our
                  sales.
Tom: Your success in the competition is truly wonderful for your product records. That’s one
credential that will also help you get higher sales. I’m sure that your launching of this product
will start a good competition with other items.

               1. What are some admirable traits of your competitors? How do you compete
                  with these favorable traits?

                  Sample answer:
Our competitors are always innovating. They come up with new models every season.
Their creative team is hardworking. We want to display this kind of innovation and
creativity too. Our rival’s strength in this field challenges us to do better. Hence, we
are now adding more people in our creative team to top this particular strength of our
                  competitor.

               2. Are you faring well in the competition in the market? Why do you say so?

                  Sample answer:
We may not be the best at the moment, but based on the steady growth that we have been
enjoying, I am optimistic that there’s a big chance for us to occupy the second or even the top
                  slot in our field.

               3. Do you believe that competition is good in business? Why?
