2. What can you, as a common citizen, do to prevent the spread of diseases?
Sample answer:
Our health centers constantly emphasize that cleanliness is one of the most important
factors in disease control. Many diseases can occur because we don’t keep our sur-
roundings clean enough. These diseases can be transmitted via animal vectors, which
thrive in filthy environments.
3. What is/are the center(s) for disease control in your country?
Sample answer:
In the U.S., the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the government
agency in charge of identifying, tracking and controlling the spread of diseases. The
CDC assists local and state health departments in dealing with emergencies and dis-
ease outbreaks.
1. You’re colleague Emil has been having fever for the past two days. He also
has been having constant headaches and loss of appetite. In spite of this,
he has been continuing to go to the office since there is a report due in a few
days. You learned that he hasn’t even consulted a doctor.
Sample answer:
Emil, I’ve noticed that you haven’t been yourself these past days. I understand that
you have a report to finish, but I really think you should get yourself checked out first.
Although your symptoms can be attributed to simple influenza, they can also point to
diseases that are more serious. I think health should be our main priority. We won’t be
able to give our best if we’re not in the peak of health. If you want, I can accompany
you to the clinic right now.
2. You heard that a colleague of yours, Mark, had been quarantined after his
business trip. He recently arrived from Indonesia and apparently, there had
been a dengue fever outbreak there. Your other officemate Lin asks you to
differentiate quarantine and isolation.
Sample answer:
Quarantine and isolation are two traditional methods for preventing the spread of
contagious diseases. They work by limiting the exposure of other people to people
who may be infected or might have been exposed to the disease. Quarantine is ap-
plicable to people who have been exposed to the disease but who may or may not
become infected in the future. On the other hand, isolation is for people who are
definitely already infected
