Unit13
The director never fails to get me to
listen whenever he holds talks.
Jay: That was a great talk! It’s great when we can learn and have fun at the same time, isn’t it?
Ann: It sure is. The best part is that the topic was truly relevant to us.
Eli: The director never fails to get me to listen whenever he holds discussions.
Ann: Why do you think he’s so great at engaging the audience?
Jay: One thing I’ve noticed is his energy. His enthusiasm is contagious.
Eli: Yes, his powerful voice and his passionate gestures all help to capture attention.
Ann: He communicates with us naturally.
Jay: That’s true! When he’s excited about a project, you can really see his excitement.
Eli: But when he’s delivering bad news, you can also feel his sincerity and compassion.
Ann: I know! It’s great! You can’t help but admire him for being genuine.
Jay: I want to be able to speak like him.
Eli: Me too! When I speak, the audience seems passive. I don’t know how to engage them.
Ann: I feel like I’m giving my all, but they don’t respond.
Jay: I read somewhere that “to the audience, you look and sound much different than what you
think”.
Ann: Really? Then how would you know how you actually look and sound?
Jay: Some speakers videotape their speeches but I don’t think that’s not an option for most of us.
Perhaps we can rehearse in front of someone who’ll be able to give constructive criticism.
Eli: I think that’s a good idea! We should do that!
Ann: Maybe we can be each other’s coaches.
Jay: I agree!
Eli: Let’s do that!
1. How important is engaging your audience?
Sample answer:
It is very important, since the only way to put your message across effectively is by
engaging your audience. Even if you have a great message, the acceptance of the
audience greatly depends on how well you get their attention.
