The Borobudur Conservation Archives hold the remarkable story
of how the world came together to save Borobudur Temple in
the 1970s and 1980s. A total of 28 countries and 8 private
organizations supported this project, making it one of UNESCO's
largest conservation efforts since the rescue of the Abu Simbel
Temple in Egypt. This gave rise to the idea of the World Heritage
Convention, as the conservation of Borobudur proved to be an
example of international cooperation in preserving cultural
heritage of universal value.
What makes this project special is that every stone and statue
at Borobudur was dismantled, cleaned, coded, and then
reassembled using modern technology and anastylosis
methods to preserve their authenticity.
The Borobudur Conservation Archives not only record the
process of saving Borobudur Temple, but also bear witness to
how the world once came together to save Indonesia's priceless
cultural heritage.
