The story of Panji originates from Java and tells
of a prince's journey full of obstacles as he
searches for his beloved princess. This story not
only developed in the Nusantara, but also spread
widely throughout Southeast Asia and was found
in many languages and scripts. Its popularity has
led to the Panji manuscript being stored in
various major libraries around the world, proof of
how widespread the influence and importance of
this story is in global cultural heritage.
More than just a love story, Panji's tale is steeped
in mythical elements, including gods, wars, the
upper and lower worlds, and the transformation
of humans into other creatures. It is no wonder
that this story has long been the subject of
academic study and a source of inspiration for the
arts, from literature and dance to puppetry and
theater. The Panji tale is an example of how local
heritage can have global significance. This Panji
manuscript is considered relevant to art, science,
and our understanding of the world.
