Panji Tales Manuscript
The Panji Tales Found in at
Least Eight Languages
The Panji tale originated in Java and has spread
widely throughout Southeast Asia. This tale has been
found in at least eight languages, with Javanese-
Balinese, Javanese, and Malay being the most
common, and has been passed down for centuries as
an important part of cultural traditions in Indonesia,
Malaysia, and surrounding areas. Due to their
extraordinary historical and cultural value, Leiden
University Library, the National Library of
Indonesia, the National Library of Malaysia, and the
National Library of Cambodia jointly nominated their
Panji manuscript collections for inclusion in the
Memory of the World Register of UNESCO in 2017.
