3. Take the thermometer from the solution, wipe, check reading, and be sure it is down to
0
35 c or below.
4. Lubricate the bulb.
5. Insert tube gently 2 to 3cms. And below it to remain in place for three minutes. Hold
the thermometer in place if the patient is unable.
6. Remove the thermometer and care for it as for mouth thermometer.
7. Be certain that you do not mix rectal and oral thermometer.

Rectal or perineal surgery
Fecal impaction
Rectal infection
N.B: 1. Never take rectal temperature immediately after an enema or colonic irrigation.
2. All temperatures taken by rectum, axilla, or oral should be indicated as such.
ii. Auxiliary temperature
Equipment: Same as an oral tray. An oral thermometer may be used if an auxiliary
thermometer is not available).
Procedure
1. Dry the axilla well but do not use friction
2. Remove thermometer from solution, dry, shack dawn if necessary.
3. Place bulb in the hollow of the axilla
4. Do not allow clothing to come in contact with the thermometer
5. The thermometer must remain in place for at least five minutes.
6. The temperature will be about one degree Celsius lower than the mouth temperature
and two degrees Celsius lower than rectal temperature.
B. Respiration
Purpose
a) To aid in diagnosis
b) To compare the abnormal with the normal breathing.
Procedure
1. Respirations are counted while taking the pulse.
2. After counting the pulse have fingers on the wrist and count the respiration by
watching, the rise and fall of the chest or abdomen; the patient should not be aware that
you are counting his respiration as he might control his breathing.
3. Count respirations for half a minute and multiply by two; if regular
